First Period: What to Expect

First Period: What to Expect

What is a Period?

A period, also known as menstruation, is when blood exits your body through the vagina. This process occurs about once a month as part of your body's natural cycle. Menstruation is your body's way of shedding the lining of the uterus that it didn't need.

Typically, a period lasts between 3-7 days. However, it is common for your first few periods to last only a few days. If your period lasts more than 7 days, notify a trusted adult and seek medical attention.

When Will It Happen?

Typically, girls experience their first period (or menarche) between the ages of 10 and 15.Β  To estimate when you will get your first period, it can be helpful to ask your mother about her experience. Additionally, your body will show signs as it prepares for menstruation:

  • Breast development:Β Tenderness and growth of breast tissue are often initial indicators. Most girls get their first period 2-3 years after their breasts begin to develop.
  • Pubic hair:Β Shortly after breast development, you may notice hair growth in the pubic area.
  • Skin changes:Β Around the same time, your skin may also become oilier with potential pimples appearing.
  • Body shape:Β Your body’s shape and size will change quickly about 6 months to 1 year before your first period.
  • Vaginal discharge:Β Clear or white discharge is a common signal that your period is approaching. Wearing a pantyliner can help avoid moisture buildup and protect your underwear.
  • Mood swings:Β As your body adjusts to new hormones, girls often experience mood swings during their first periods, including irritability, sadness, or heightened sensitivity. If you experience these mood swings, know that they are completely normal. However, talking to a trusted adult can make things easier if you feel overwhelmed.

Preparing for Your First Period

There are different period products to choose from, however, most girls find padsΒ easier and more convenient. Here are some recommendations:

  • You can never go wrong with UMA Ultra Slim Pads. They are thin and flexibleβ€”you will barely notice you are wearing one!
  • If you are not used to wearing a pad, UMA Pants are the perfect optionΒ for you. They are shaped and fit just like underwear, but with a built-in pad inside!Β Unlike wearing pads, youΒ don't have to worry aboutΒ them not staying in place.
  • UMA Daily Liners are greatΒ forΒ theΒ days when you notice more discharge. Also, sinceΒ you never know when your first period will arrive, it’s a great idea store aΒ few in your bag for emergencies!
